Two local teenagers took time out from their half-term holiday to learn more
about National Talking Newspapers and Magazines.
Robert Goswell, 15, and his brother Andrew, 12, from Gorse Hill, took a behind-the-scenes tour of the charity's studios in Heathfield, even having a go at reading one of many publications which are recorded for blind, visually impaired and print-disabled people both at home and abroad.
The boys were encouraged to take a tour by their grandmother Ruth Buckingham, whose partner, Ben Darnley, has been a subscriber to National Talking Newspapers and Magazines after losing his sight six years ago.
Ruth accompanied her grandsons on their visit. She said: "I saw a poster asking for volunteers and thought that this might be something that Robert and Andrew would like to do in the future. National Talking Newspapers and Magazines makes such a difference to Ben. He loves receiving his publications so he can keep up-to-date with subjects that have always interested him."
As part of their visit Robert and Andrew also learned more about the production process involved in duplicating the 25,000 plus audio tapes and 1,000 CDs which are sent out to 7,000 subscribers each week.
Summing up their visit Andrew Goswell said: "I really enjoyed the studio recording, though it was a bit nerve racking!"
His brother, Robert, added: " I didn't know much about National Talking Newspapers and Magazines and just thought that publications were just provided on tape. So, I was very impressed to see the technology which is used to produce all the different formats, such as CDs, MP3 downloads and digital text.
