We need you! That’s the call from National Talking Newspapers and Magazines (NTN & M) which is looking for volunteers to help provide its unique service for blind and print-disabled people. The message is going out during National Volunteers Week (1st-7th June) when people may be thinking of giving up some of their spare time to help worthwhile causes.
Based in Heathfield, East Sussex, NTN & M transcribes provides than 200 popular national newspaper and magazines titles in a range of accessible formats, including audio tapes, CDs and digital downloads for people whose sight loss or physical disability means that they can no longer read.
To make the service possible many volunteers give their time in a variety of ways. Some do work on the computers, others help in production and some take part in the recording process.
“We always need volunteers and your help can play an invaluable role in helping a locally-based charity enrich the lives of so many," explained volunteer co-ordinator Pip Price. “Our service is described as lifeline by our listeners as it helps them stay in touch with the outside world and keep up-to-date with news, current affairs, their hobbies and interests.
“Blindness can lead to a great sense of isolation. However, our subscribers often say that our recordings don't just keep them in touch but that our readers become like friends visiting them each week or month. There are a wide range of volunteering opportunities and if you are interested in becoming a reader, then we can offer informal auditions and full training.”
The invaluable contribution of the charity’s 200 plus volunteers was officially recognised last year when the charity received the prestigious Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.
