Further recognition for National Talking Newspapers and Magazines

National Talking Newspapers and Magazines (NTN & M) was recently invited to an exclusive event in Brighton organised by The Office of the Third Sector in the Cabinet Office (June 29th 2009) to talk about the charity’s experience of winning the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service and encourage nominations across the South East region.

NTN & M received this prestigious award, a National Honour equivalent to the MBE, in 2008 for providing blind, partially sighted and print disabled people with newspapers and magazines in audio and electronic format. The Award was created by Her Majesty to mark the occasion of her Golden Jubilee in 2002, and is the highest honour that can be bestowed upon groups of individuals who give their time freely for the benefit of others in the local community.

An audience of local mayors, council officials, volunteering group representatives and other members of the public heard how eligible groups can be nominated for the Award in recognition of their outstanding work.

The Queen’s representative in East Sussex, HM Lord-Lieutenant Peter John Field sq. DL, welcomed guests, saying, “The voluntary sector is vital to all aspects of the community, and the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service has proved an important way of bringing recognition to those outstanding groups who dedicate themselves to improving local people's lives. The fact that the Queen launched this Award in her Jubilee year shows the importance placed by Her Majesty on volunteering.”

Inspiration was given to those attending by NTN & M’s Chief Executive, John Kerby who spoke about the impact winning has had on the charity’s volunteers and its work, adding:

“Receiving the Award was a wonderful honour for National Talking Newspapers and Magazines. It's not only a fantastic recognition of what we’ve achieved, but the fact it's the Queen who has recognised our work has made a great difference in terms of opportunities for raising our profile and getting interest from more volunteers. If you know a group in your area, get out there and nominate!"

750 groups around the UK have won the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service since 2002, 14 of which have been awarded to groups in East Sussex.
