Adam Bing raised £200.50 for National Talking Newspapers and Magazines when he decided to spend a whole day, 12 hours, wearing a blindfold. The day in question was a normal school day after exams as Adam explains...
“The night before I had been staying at the school as a temporary boarder, so I started my blind day already at school. Throughout the day I was helped by my ‘guide dog’, Alec York. I successfully remained blindfolded for 12 hours, finishing the day by listening to a talking book.
There were only three moments when I had to take my blindfold off: one when I accidently hit Mrs Carr with a sock (oops!); the other two were during lessons when I had to watch a video or do some written work. Everything felt surreal and as if I was in a dream; it was as if the things that I did would have no effect and disappear later. As I was feeling my way around I would form a picture in my mind that was usually wrong. I would walk in to lockers, suddenly find stairs where they weren’t expected or even think I was in a different room to where I actually was. Another thing that struck me (apart from the lockers) was how helpful people were when I was unable to see. Almost everyone finding me stuck would help out and get me on the right track.
Although when I woke up I had not expected it to be easy, I’d not expected it to be so hard. By far my biggest challenge of the day was eating lunch, something I hadn’t even thought about. Luckily there was nothing runny in any of my meals that day, or else I would probably have dropped most my food down my front. As the day passed things became easier and easier; by the end of the day, stairs were hardly a problem at all.
My understanding of the difficulties blind people face and the respect I hold for blind people has increased thanks to this experience. " Adam Bing.
